Karl...We Are Not Worthy...

On Saturday afternoon I visited the Maison Europeenne de La Photographie in the Le Marais district to see the Karl Lagerfeld exhibition. It was incredible. Not only can the man produce multiple amazing fashion shows annually, his collection of travel and fashion photography dating back to the early eighties was breathtaking. His shots of NYC and Versailles were haunting. Also on display was a series by Tania and Vincent (no last names mentioned) titled "Consumation. Consommation de luxe dans Citizen K". This exhibit was a showcase of  work  done for Citizen K magazine that satirized haute couture. I left having spent a mere four euros for what has been one of the greatest highlights of my time in Paris so far.
(Above silhouette is the one Karl pic I was able to photograph).

Every Morning....

I come out of the Metro at St Germain des Pres and the first thing I see is Le Café de Flore. It's still surreal. I walk by the beautiful people who can afford eight euro espressos and then spend their afternoons perusing the incredible shops that surround my school.

All the brands I lust after taunt me from these shop windows every morning: Zadig and Voltaire, Dries Van Noten, Dior, Hermès...but what pains me the most to pass is Sonia Rykiel and here is why...

l'École...Parisienne Style.

My education in Paris has officially begun and here is what I have learned so far:

1. You must dress like you just came from an editorial spread in French Vogue.

2. Speaking English is not cool.

3. You should be skinny, smoke skinny cigarettes and wear skinny fitting pants, but you should eat large baguettes with cheese and butter for lunch.

4. The metro is on strike will never be questioned as an excuse for being late.

5. Always look bored...even when you are taking French magazine editing classes and are beyond thrilled!

Oh yeah, and Sciences Po classrooms have gorgeous 18th century windows and fireplaces...no big deal.

A Canadian Shout Out..

On the flight to Paris from Montreal I sat with a couple who were on their way here to see their daughter's fashion show debut in Paris. She is a designer based in Montreal named Jude and her line is called bodybag. Her proud mom gave me a catalogue and the clothes are wonderful.

The Token Paris Pic...

Fashion Night and its Queen...

How could I be so lucky... I arrive in Paris and two days following is Paris Fashion Night! Which means all the designer stores are open late and the industry's finest make appearances. This may not be the finest pic...but this is Editor in Chief of Paris Vogue Carine Roitfeld exiting the Jean Paul Gaultier event. These are not very flattering photos, but she was quite striking in person. She stopped before getting into her car to sign a balloon for a little girl, and appeared very casual and nice with her assistants. Then she was whisked away in a little austin mini with vogue printed across the side. Very unpretentious and very exciting pour moi.

Here is another pic from the same night stolen from another blog just to do Carine a bit more photographic justice. Now if only I can get a glimpse of Monsieur Karl while I am here too...

Jean Paul Gaultier...

The flagship store on the Champs-Élysées...

...and some not so fabulous pictures of the fabulous designer himself! I snuck myself in as far as I could to the invite-only Gaultier party and before security realized I had no invite I scored these pics.

Statues and Stuff.

This second pic could be me right now after spending my first Parisienne hang over day searching for apartments.

Arc de Triomphe

While photographing the Arc a couple asked me for directions! I had been in Paris less than 24 hours. Turns out they were a couple on their honeymoon from Victoria...Small world.
